James Oswald was born in 1710 in a small Scottish fishing community, the son of the town's drummer, and became Scotland's most prolific and successful publisher composer of the 18th century. He died in 1769, chamber composer to King George III, master of one of England's great stately homes and, it has been contended, composer of the music to 'God Save the King'.
Despite his success as a musician, little of substance has been written about Oswald, yet in recent years there has been a flurry of interest in his work and various enthusiasts have recorded his music. Retired journalist Tom Davison, who lives just a few miles from Oswald's birthplace in Fife, determined that this revival of interest warranted a comprehensive biography of the man.
